About these whale coloring pages
Whales are the gentle giants of the coloring page: a big rounded body that fills the paper, a broad tail fluke, and a soft spout arcing from the blowhole. This set runs from round cartoon whales to carefully observed humpbacks, belugas and narwhals, so there's a page for a quick five minutes or a long, patient afternoon.
The Easy pages are chubby kawaii whales with thick simple outlines — a smiling whale, a spouting whale, a baby whale beside its mother. The Detailed pages open up whole ocean scenes — kelp forests, reefs, migrations and starry skies — alongside realistic humpbacks, sperm whales and narwhals with accurate flukes, flippers and markings. All free to print on US Letter or A4 as PDF or PNG.
Coloring tips and activities
- Most whales are countershaded — darker across the back, pale on the belly and along the grooved throat — so blend from a deep slate on top down to almost white underneath for a rounded, lifelike body.
- Deep blues, slate and soft violet all suit a whale's wet skin; keep the belly and the underside of the fluke pale so the huge body still reads as light and buoyant.
- Leave the spout, splash and any bubbles white with only a thin edging line so the water looks airy rather than solid.
- For the humpback, add long parallel grooves along the throat and pepper the flippers and tail with small barnacle-like bumps; for the beluga, keep the skin smooth and almost white with only the faintest gray shadows.
